WOrkshop 1
Students will be given a presentation about introductory information regarding the ACT. I will show a PowerPoint slide while students take notes on the information presented to them. If time is applicable we will then take a practice ACT Writing sample either handwriting it out or online through a program called LearningExpress. The computer automatically grades the written sample and tells students where they will need extra support. This will be a diagnostic assessment to see what students need extra help with and what students already have down pat.
Workshop 2 - 5
Students will be learning how to write and develop an argumentative essay. The writing portion of the ACT asks students to respond to a prompt that will have them choosing either one side of the argument or the other. It is pertinent that students are able to express reasoning behind why they chose a certain side of the argument in a logical and organized way. Using the Learning Express online program (http://www.learnatest.com/lel/index.cfm/) students will take the writing portion of the ACT as practice. The online program will grade the student and give them details about what they need the most improvement on. This is only a practice test and students will be able to see what they need extra assistance with and also find out what they would have scored based on their writing.
WORKSHOP 6 - 8
Students will be learning about online applications that aid with forms of blended learning. During our workshops for this week we will have a special guest, Mary Bullard, from Monroe High School, assist our students with Google Docs and how to use the program. Monroe High will be switching their mailing system to a gmail platform and with a new foundation for Google coming out in September more and more educators will be integrating this online technology within their classrooms. It is important that students know how to use the technology for an educational benefit.
Workshop 9
Students will continue their Reading examination through the online practice test program. Once they have completed this test we will talk about areas in which students are lacking and steps we can take to increase these scores. The online program grades the student right after they take their exam so we can figure out problem areas.
